Paola Gaviria (PowerPaola, Cali, 1977) is both author and illustrator of Virus Tropical (Tropical Virus), a coming of age story set in the eighties and nineties of the past century. The setting of the novel moves from Quito, the capital of Ecuador, to Cali, a Colombian city beset by drug trafficking. The book sets down the social and historical complexity of the times together with the gripping story of a young south American woman´s independence. The novel groups together different aspects of the protagonists’ experience: Family, friends, love, money, adolescence, etc. Power Paola’s graphic signature is deceptively simple, her use of splash pages to preface each of the novels’ segments parodies the conventions of high art painting and a clever use of word balloon positioning offers an interesting formal quirk. This novel is published by Independent South American Publisher El Fakir, a small Ecuadorian press dedicated entirely to promoting and disseminating the work of undervalued Ecuadorian books and authors.

Paola Gaviria (PowerPaola, Cali, 1977) es la autora y dibujante colombo-ecuatoriana de la novela gráfica Virus Tropical, un relato autobiográfico ochentero y noventero que narra la vida de la protagonista en Quito y Cali y que, de paso, registra la complejidad socio histórica y personal de una joven mujer sudamericana en pleno proceso de maduración. La novela arrasa con la modestia narrativa que caracteriza buena parte de los recuentos autobiográficos y agrupa la experiencia de la joven Paola en distintos acápites: La Familia, el dinero, el amor, los amigos, la adolescencia y otros. El trazo de PowerPaola parece simple a primera vista; en realidad, sin embargo, contiene una gran complejidad. El uso de viñetas amplias, al inicio de cada segmento de la novela, por ejemplo, parodia las convenciones del arte clásico y la ubicación de los globos de diálogo presenta una interesante innovación gráfica en la novela.
