Peces mudos – HOTLIST 2020

The invincible noise of advancing water soaks through the thirteen short stories of Peces mudos [Silent Fishes], reminding us of a flood that first barely slips in underneath the door, but which, by the end,engulfs all. At the mercy of shoreline or swamp, characters are submerged in the mute oppressive world of animals, owning the calmness of everyday nature and the stoicism of minerals.

The main characters change from story to story, but it is not difficult to dive into their habitat and recognize them, always impassive, with their temperament rusted by the salty ocean air. Childhood landscapes merge with Lazaro´s mature and subtle open air narratives which, nevertheless, ruthlessly plunge us underground.

Rosario Lázaro Igoa (Salto, Uruguay, 1981). Literary translator and journalist, Rosario spent her childhood and adolescence in the seaside town of La Paloma, Rocha. She holds a Bachelor´s Degree in Communication (Uruguay, 2006), and PhD in Translation Studies from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Brazil, 2015), with an investigation period in Belgium. She has published the novel Mayito (2006) and several short stories in magazines and in the anthologies: Exposición múltiple (2015), Kafkaville (2015), Entintalo (2012), and El descontento y la promesa (2008). She writes chronicles and fiction for La Diaria and Lento and has translated novels and short stories from Portuguese to Spanish. She lives in Brazil since 2009, where she works as a researcher and slowly writes.

El ruido invencible del avance del agua va permeando estos trece cuentos como en una inundación que al principio se filtra apenas por debajo de la puerta y termina por tragárselo todo. A merced de la costa o del pantano, los personajes están sumergidos en mundos opresivos de mutismo animal, con la naturalidad de lo cotidiano y el estoicismo de los minerales.
Los protagonistas cambian de una historia a otra pero es fácil entrar en sus hábitats y reconocerlos, casi siempre parcos, con el carácter oxidado por el aire salino del océano. El paisaje de la infancia se cruza con la narrativa madura y sutil de la autora de estos cuentos a cielo abierto que, sin embargo, hurgan sin recelos en lo subterráneo.

Rosario Lázaro Igoa (Salto, Uruguay, 1981). Traductora literaria y periodista. Pasó la niñez y adolescencia en La Paloma, Rocha. Se licenció en Comunicación (2006) y obtuvo un doctorado en Estudios de la Traducción por la Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina (2015), con un período de investigación en Bélgica. Publicó la novela Mayito (2006) y cuentos en las antologías Exposición múltiple (2015), Kafkaville (2015), Entintalo (2012) y El descontento y la promesa (2008). Colabora con La Diaria y la revista Lento. Ha traducido novelas y cuentos del portugués al español. Vive en Brasil desde 2009, donde trabaja como investigadora y escribe despacio.
