On the 50th anniversary of Che Guevara’s death in Bolivia, Marea presents the legendary travels of his youth, for the first time together in a single luxury edition. In 1952, riding La Poderosa II, and old motorcycle, two friends travel through America. One of them, Ernesto Guevara, the 23 years old son of a wealthy family and a medical student, unknowingly begins a much longer journey towards becoming the famous revolutionary Che Guevara. The other one, Alberto Granado, a young biochemist, lives his lifetime dream and keeps a diary of the journey that would become history and would inspire thousands of young people from all around the world who nowadays travel that route. Ernesto and Alberto visit Argentina, Chile, Perú, Colombia and Venezuela and come up with a brand-new way of travelling, very far from the bourgeois idea of tourism. On the road they discover the poverty and exploitation suffered by most of the population of America.

A year later, Ernesto faces the road once again, this time with a new friend by his side: Calica Ferrer, his childhood playmate from Alta Gracia. In this journey through Bolivia, Perú and Ecuador, the fun and thrill of youth mix with new and powerful revelations about the harsh social and political reality in Latin America.

Alberto Granado Jiménez (Hernando, Córdoba, Argentina, 1922 – La Habana, Cuba, 2011) graduated as a Pharmacist (1946) and Biochemist (1948) from the Universidad de Córdoba. From 1960 on he lived in Cuba, where he doctorated in Science in Center for Scientific Research (1974). He was the founder of the Medical School of Santiago de Cuba and of the National Center for Animal and Plant Health. He worked as a collaborator for the course of studies on Che Guevara in Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba. In other countries he was also an adviser for other courses, for instance in Argentina and Venezuela.

Carlos “Calica” Ferrer Zorrilla (Alta Gracia, Córdoba, 1929) met Ernesto Guevara de la Serna in Alta Gracia, at the age of four. Ernesto was an asthmatic child who moved to the town with his family looking for a remedy for his sickness. Ernesto and Calica were close friends during their childhood and teenage years. In 1953 they began an adventurous journey though Latin America, at which’s end Ernesto would become the famous Commander Che Guevara.

Nowadays, Calica lives in Buenos Aires with his family and is dedicated to studying, preserving and spreading the knowledge about his friend Ernesto Guevara.

Alberto Granado Jiménez (Hernando, provincia de Córdoba, Argentina, 1922 – La Habana, Cuba, 2011) se graduó como farmacéutico (1946) y bioquímico (1948) por la Universidad de Córdoba. A partir del año 1960 residió en Cuba, donde hizo el doctorado en Ciencias en el Centro de Investigaciones Científicas (1974). Fue fundador de la Escuela de Medicina de Santiago de Cuba y del Centro Nacional de Sanidad Agropecuaria. Se desempeñó como asesor de la Cátedra Che Guevara de Santa Clara y de la de Santiago de Cuba. En otros países también asesoró otras cátedras, por ejemplo en Argentina y Venezuela.

Carlos “Calica” Ferrer Zorrilla (Alta Gracia, Córdoba, 4 de abril de 1929). Conoció, a los cuatro años, a Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, un chico asmático que se instaló con su familia en esa localidad serrana a buscar un alivio para su mal. Ernesto y Calica mantuvieron una amistad íntima durante la infancia y la adolescencia. En 1953 emprendieron juntos un viaje aventurero por Latinoamérica, al final del cual, Guevara terminaría convertido en el Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara. Actualmente, Calica Ferrer vive en Buenos Aires con su familia y se dedica a estudiar y difundir la figura de su amigo Ernesto Guevara. En este libro testimonial vuelca por primera vez sus experiencias al lado del Che.
