"It is hard to find a single Spanish-speaker in the world whose ancestors have remained for more than three centuries in Latin America without at least one Rodriguez surname. But it is even harder to find an individual, Spanish-speaking or not, Rodriguez or not, who is oblivious to the most democratic feeling for all mankind: preoccupations.
These concerns keep us from sleeping and dreaming. We try to fight them, although unsuccesfully. We would rather not mention them in order to stop worrying. Fortunately for the narrator, his father’s concerns and insomniac laments ended up inspiring “Las preocupaciones” (Taller de Edición Rocca), the most recent collection of short stories by Miguel Ángel Manrique, and undoubtedly one of the most outstanding editorial novelties of 2019.
[…] Its cover seduces the voyeurs, eager for windows from where to sniff out intimacies, “Las preocupaciones” is a great journey through the avatars of people who seem to have been put there by the work of Manrique’s bright pen, to show us a distressing and undeniable truth: life is what happens between preoccupations."

Novel
Un día allá por el fin del mundo is a voyage, many voyages, in an unceasing process of departure, arrival, and starting all over again, a flight from a dark country that devours its own children, a roaming about the world that begins in Buenos Aires, where the protagonist, after a week of crackdowns, abuses and violent maltreatment, is sent into exile by the dictatorship in place, forced to take on a road that would eventually lead to Israel, Canada, the United States, France, Greece, Italy, Holland, Spain, Poland, South Africa, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Bolivia, Guatemala, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile. The voyages are linked one another by a unique schedule. Every time the protagonist launches herself unto adventure she is aware of an evasion, of having to take a crucial pause. Her premise: giving in to the requirements of pain insofar it provides her with the protective shield of distance. And she will constantly seek it. However, the longed-for escapade never comes to pass, plans seems to fail over and over again; that which is avoided emerges tirelessly beneath unsuspected disguises. Memory refuses to be abandoned. The protagonist of the novel, which simultaneously is and isn’t Nora Strejilevich, attempts to forget the day which inspires the title of this book ("A day near the end of the world"), its main theme, in which her brother Gerardo is imprisoned and forcibly disappeared. By relinquishing her effort of putting things in the past, the acceptance of inescapable pain in memory finally gushes forth.

A day near the end of the world) is a tremendously captivating and original novel, both in content and form. Nora Strejilevich’s simplicity in writing brings about joyful reading amidst shimmering and translucent words. Each paragraph cascades an astounding phraseology that modulates different ways of narrating a wide array of affairs involving everyday or uncommon situations and the comings and goings of trivial or interesting characters. Hers is a highly elaborate depiction which establishes an astonishing relation between its world and the reader.

However, Alonso and his friends end up discovering a series of mysteries and dangers that are linked to their search: a curse, a sinister man who seeks to seize the jewel, a soul that stalks the sanctuary of Pachacamac, the strange phenomena that begin to torment the valley of Lurín, the enigmatic past of the family of Alonso ... Alonso Christiano and the mysterious lights of the Pampa Three years have passed since the events in the Lurín Valley. Alonso and his friends, now seventeen years old, have other types of concerns: the party of the year, the end of the year exams and especially the arrival of Ariana's cousin, Cassandra, who makes her appearance in the life of the group, touching especially Marco's heart. However, his adolescent concerns will be soon replaced by much less everyday ones: a Nasca boy who had been presumed dead reappears forty-five years later, without having changed his appearance at all; and goes to Lima, directly to the house of Alonso. What connection does that boy have with the Christiano family? Why the strange facts that plague the Pampa de Nasca since its appearance? And above all, is it possible that the origin of all the facts does not belong to this world? This exciting second installment of Alonso Christiano confirms the great narrative talent of its author, which plunges us into a fantastic world, where friendship and courage become key pieces to understand the true reach of the human being.

Without light there would not be life. But light will change the world once more. In 1880 Graham Bell made— in his own words— his best discovery : the photophone. Bell succeeded in transmitting sound over the waves of sunlight. But Bell’s problem is that the sun does not always shine. 125 years later, French physicist Suat Topsu was able to apply Bell’s innovation to LED lighting and LiFi —Internet over light waves— was born. LiFi is much faster. It is healthier because it does not interfere with our bodies. LiFi cannot be hacked and it does not require massive investments: the public light infrastructure already exists! Cities can save money replacing lights with LiFi enabling LED lights. LiFi also offers an opportunity to redesign online communication in the interest of the common good. While the Internet of Things is fast emerging, LiFi points the way to an even more exciting future: the Internet of People.

His last book, Blue economy, has been translated into 43 languages and reached more than one millions readers.

The union with the other, understood as a blessing or a curse, takes in these stories the form of a possession. A crazy psychiatrist, tormented by the voice of his delirium, uses his profession to report his own clinical case. A young woman devastated by guilt because she killed her boyfriend in a accident has an hallucination of him coming back to forgive her. An old man manages to reinvent his life by fantasizing about taking revenge on a thief who has offended him. A widower loves his wife so much that he believes that not even death has been able to separate them and assumes that she has lodged inside her belly. The stories of Amo address, in a very specific way, the crossroads between love and power, forming a constellation where the disturbing and the fun, the worrying and the exciting, the eschatological and the romantic coexist. El mar desde la orilla
Alicia Migdal
Criatura Editora
Uruguay
Novel
"This tediousness of literature, of knowing how to say, of implicit hope, dream by night and that literature interposes to tell it. To say, for example, that in a cruel dream a man, in suite and tie under the sheets, was saying I do not care about your memories" The author
ISBN 978-997-486-867-0
Alicia Migdal is already part of the Uruguayan literary canon, but she is still a foreigner who talks in her own language, the language of permanent things. Master in the art of"telling without telling", the characters of The Sea from the Shore are memories, familiar relationships, childhood, loneliness, time that runs away or crushes into death. Reminiscent of the best Marguerite Duras in her poetical intensity, Migdal's voice is intact after ten years of silence. Hers is a native voice, modulated in a state previous to the patriarchal law of discourse. A voice that is slowly savored with all senses, a literary delicacy.

In an urban corner, the protagonist wanders in brief and intense sexual encounters. They draw what they think and whatever happens in the street. A strange noise sounds in their room, at night. What’s that discomfort? What’s the missing piece that solves the riddle of loneliness? Sometimes who better understands human issues is an alien.
Femimutancia creates their own rhythm, their own structure for a story that flows between the erotic, the slice of life and fantasy. An accurate and mysterious narration.

Retamo
Eduardo Plaza
Libros de mentira
Chile
Novel
"The writing of Retamo by the narrator Eduardo Plaza adopts fragmentation as a central element that differs, displaces, segments writing to generate an intense poetics based on melancholy and a deep thirst that never ceases. It is this thirst that rises like a liquid footprint to emphasize in a sensitive way the impossibility of reaching family fullness. The voice of the father (the voice law would say Lacan) is fantasmatic, present and remote. It speaks in the narrator or with him or by him. Or it always appears intimely allied to the rope. The memory wanders and wanders in an incessant mental journey that accompanies a body lacking of energy, while moving with a tragic apathy for the territory. The wound of the narrator's arm is the symptom-mask of the other wound, that of childhood, after which the three-year-old boy who reiterates his scene of the collapse again and again. Retamo is story and writing. A novel that will remain in current literature because of the precision of its structure and its impeccable writing."

"A beautiful and heartbreaking book about the traces of the past in the bodies and in the imagination of its protagonists. Retamo traces a new landscape of a devastated Chile."

Retamo is his first novel.

Rebeliones y revelaciones
Giaconda Bello Pereira

Nicaragua
Novel
“The woman who rebels, reveals herself” proclaimed José Coronel Urtecho about Gioconda Belli in her first poems. In this new work, between autobiography, essay and anthology, Belli says that he was right and reveals herself to us as the woman who fought all oppressions: she joined the FSLN's fight against Somoza’s dictatorship and she revealed, from her body and hersensuality, through poetry, as a woman in front of machismo. All her personal life and literary career is reflected in Rebellions and revelations, because, as Laura Mintegi affirms in the preface to this edition, “nobody has really analyzed who Gioconda Belli is like she does. And she has done it in the most feminine way that can be conceived: thinking through her affections and her intuitions. Because female literature is that, writing from what she is, from being a woman”. A deep and merciless introspection of her woman being.
ISBN 978-841-706-538-6
Gioconda Belli is a Nicaraguan poet, writer and political activist. She won the Casa de las Americas Prize in 1978 for her poetry book Line of fire, and the prize for the Best Political Novel of the Year in Germany in 1989 for her novel The Inhabited Woman. Her work has been translated into twenty languages. Three of her novels are translated into English: The Inhabited Woman, The Scroll of Seduction and Infinity in the Palm of Her Hand, a book of her poetry: From Eve’s Rib is also available in English. In Spanish, she has published eight poetry books and eight novels, plus a memoir, a book of essays and four children's books. Her memoir The Country under my skin was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 2001 and selected as one of the best books of the year by the same newspaper. In 2008, she won one of the most prestigious Spanish prizes, the Biblioteca Breve for her novel Infinity in the Palm of her hand. For this novel, she also received the Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz prize from the Guadalajara Book Fair in Mexico. In 2010 she was awarded the Latin American prize, “La Otra Orilla” for her novel El País de las Mujeres ("Women land"). Her last work is Rebeliones y revelaciones. PEN Germany recently awarded her the Hermann Kesten Prize for her defense of freedom of the press and her role as a women’s advocate. She is President of PEN International, Nicaragua, a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Letters and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of France.

Art Book
Vaqueros de la Cruz del Diablo is a book based on a life project that started more than thirty years ago, when the artist Werner Segarra arrived in the mountains of northern Mexico in the region of Sonora without knowing that, from that moment on, he would devote much of his life to the documentation of the lives of Mexican cowboys. Segarra's extensive work around this subject inspired this editorial project because it reflects the human essence and customs of this territory, where the authentic“cowboy”still exists in our modern times. He is portrayed with natural light, among his friends and family, with the magnitude and aridity of its landscape, and with the tools that account for centuries of history and tradition. The strength of this photographic material lies in its technique and in the approach that manages to rescue an identity that fights a constant battle against modernity and the comfort of our time.

Werner Segarra (Puerto Rico, 1966) has been a professional photographer for more than thirty years, he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions as well as individual exhibitions in various galleries and museums, including: Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum, Phoenix AZ, and Chiaroscuro Gallery, Santa Fe, NM. The inspiration for his work comes from his personal experiences, which cultivated his artistic sensibility and his respect for native cultures. It was the time he spent in northern Mexico, where he was immersed in the cowboy world, that captivated and motivated him to convey his love and respect for this culture, as well as share it with the rest of the world.

Novel
We are all the same shadow is full of women who are losing something. They lose a love story, a father, their cat, and even the sunlight. They are women who choose to feel that loss by their own rules: escaping to an island that shelters the oblivion of the world, spying the emails of an ex-boyfriend about his bad war novel or hunting animals in the dark to survive in apocalyptic times. They are also women who, at times, choose to feel nothing at all, because it is an exhausting experience or because what is lost is part of a past that is already meaningless. Catalina Infante, with a minimalist prose full of symbols and metaphors, through stories and fragments builds the experience of women who laugh at themselves; women who remember other times, other lands, other lives, to give light ―or shadow― to the difficult quality of rethinking reality from the literature.

Ecuador
Graphic novel
In the spirit of metafiction, this novel places Ecuadorian historic convention under suspicion, in particular Ecuadorian Art History, and substitutes that dominant form of expression with detective fiction. Seen from the author’s perspective, Ecuadorian Art History begins with an unresolved crime: the disappearance of an enormous mural painting, fashioned by Camilo Egas, with the collaboration of Bolívar Mena Franco and Eduardo Kingman for the Ecuadorian pavilion in the World Fair held in New York city in 1940. This novel involves us in that prior story by means of Kika, a young woman that faces her own adolescence and becomes involved, together with her circle of friends, in designing and putting in motion small acts of vandalism and of symbolic rebellion. Without prior warning, she is swept into a secret conspiracy around the disappearance of Egas’ gigantic mural painting. At her father’s request, she will become the key piece in solving the mystery and producing restitution for the errors of the past. The lives of several individuals will converge in this mysterious plot that bleeds into the daily life of an Andean city that, in part, plays a central role in the story.“This is perhaps the first Ecuadorian Graphic Novel that displays a grand understanding of narrative, it informs us of a true-life enigma in our own Art History. A plot and a secret that is deliciously unveiled by sensuous and suspicious female characters.

Fabián Patinho is a visual artista and playwright. He created the comic strip Ana y Milena. He has published a book of poems: Calla ahora o habla para siempre (Be Silent Now or Speak Forever) (1998), a novel Hipocampos en la ciénaga ("Seahorses in the Wetlands") (2010) and currently, the graphic novel El ejército de los tiburones martillo ("An Army of Hammerhead Sharks") (2018). Among his dramatic works that been brought to the stage are: El agitado paseo del señor Lucas ("Señor Lucas’agitated promenade") (1998) Elías o quién diablos te crees que eres ("Elias or Who the Hell Do You Think You Are") (2003), María no quiere despertar ("Maria Has No Wish to Awaken") (2013), El estigma y el ladrón ("The Thiefand the Stigma") (2014), Marco a flor de agua ("Marco On the Edge of Water")(2015), Las mentiras de Aurora ("Aurora’s Lies") (2016), Fermín no es nombre para un ciego ("Fermin Is No Name for a Blind Man") (2018) and A Trinidad le sobra una oreja ("Trinidad Has an Extra Ear")(2018). In 2018 he published an anthology of four of his plays.

Argentina
Novel
“The silence stretches. This is how far we get. Mom’s that bit of unreachable skin between my shoulder blades, that bit that itches and I can’t scratch”. Following a childhood accident, Ema digs deep into her bond with her mother and, pregnant with her second child, sets on a journey in search of answers: who is Elena, really? Does she truly know her? Her mother is distant and no matter how hard she tries, she can’t reach her. The years haven’t changed that. Filled with accurate images, Adriana Riva’s bare writing rethinks family ties with admirable precision, humor and rawness, making La Sal (The Salt) into an intimate and touching novel.
“This is the age of women, and Argentinian literature is being renewed by many female writers. Adriana Riva writes with verbal brilliance, creates wonderful images and shoots at the heart of empathy. With this book she asserts herself as a very unique voice of this landscape”. Santiago Llach

Adrina Riva was born in Buenos Aires in 1980. She worked ten years as a journalist. Her first short-story book, Angst, was published in 2017, and an illustrated María Elena Walsh biography, Between the leaves that sing, in 2018. She has three daughters. La Sal (The Salt) is her first novel.
